Fourah Bay College holds the record for being the first Western-Style University built in Sub-Saharan Africa, from which the first sets of university graduates in Sub-Saharan Africa emerged. This college contributed immensely to Freetown gaining the nickname “the Athens of West Africa

News

The college sits on the beautiful Mount Aureol, a landscape etched in serene greenery affording it a panoramic and picturesque view of Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. FBC has since tremendously evolved in terms of curricula and also curricular and structural reforms. In the year 2000, Fourah Bay College in an effort to modernise and standardise its previous system of assessment, the trimester system, introduced the Semester System which gave birth to the modular system within the university structure. FBC comprises seven faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics & Development Studies, and the Faculty of Communication, Media & Information Studies.

In this course, we will explore the fundamental principles and concepts of Spectroscopy- an analytical technique that is used for the structural elucidation of organic molecules. Physical Analytical Chemistry is a fascinating field that combines aspects of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The study enables us to determine the chemical structures of simple organic molecules. However, its application can also be extended to biomolecules, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids

    The Faculty currently has two Institutes, namely: the Institute of Gender Research and Documentation (INGRAO.OC) and the Institute of Educational and Extra-Mural Studies, which has two sub-divisions of Educational Studies and Extra-Mural Studies. There are three departments, namely: History and African Studies, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Language Studies, which have five units, including – an English Unit; a French Unit; a Chinese Unit – a Confucius Institute; a Linguistics Unit, and an Arabic Unit. Through the above-mentioned Institutes and departments, the faculty runs a number of postgraduate and under-listed undergraduate, diploma, and certificate programmes
